I am trying to move to another city. How should I communicate this? By Anne McKinney, Prep Publishing I want to move to another city and I would like to tell the employer that I will be in the area on a specific date and available for an interview. How can I address this information in a cover letter? Great question! In the last paragraph of the cover letter, you might want to say this: “Although I am excelling in my current position, I have decided to resign in order to permanently relocate to the Wilmington area so that I can live closer to my extended family. I will be in the Wilmington area researching housing options from June 15 – June 25, and I would be delighted to make myself available to meet you at your convenience. If you would be kind enough to e-mail me at the e-mail address on my resume in order to suggest a good day for you, I would be happy to call you to make the final arrangements. I can provide outstanding references at the appropriate time, and I appreciate in advance your professional courtesies to me.” If your resume shows an address in another state, it is very important that you let the employer know in the cover letter that you are definitely moving--not just having a bad day at work and thinking about moving. Remember that it's easier for the employer to take a chance on a "local" rather than an out-of-towner. If you are moving, you can often show two different addresses at the top of your resume. You can put your first address as "Until 02/15/2003:" and the second address you can show as "After 02/20/2003." The more definite you appear to be about moving, the more confidence the employer will have in considering you as a viable candidate. Remember, if you're out of town, you are not just competing against the skills of similar professionals. You are competing against the "locals" who already have some knowledge of the area and area employers and "the way things are done" in that town.
